Dear Andy,
Eyes are cast shut, then sculpted open on lifecasts. This requires practice and patience. Dave Parvin, an ALI instructor, teaches this techniue in his workshop. Mark Prent's latest video shows incorporating glass eyes. No explanation would fit in an email. You must see it done first.

It is possible to cast around an open eye - but there's a secret knack to it (and you need a tolerant, trusting model)...you obviously don't stick alginate in an open eye. again it's hard to explain in a brief email. I suggest you get in contact with john schoonraad - one of the ALI board members - he taught me how to do it and he could explain in much better detail than I could. saves all that rescuplting after!

Dear CJ,
Come on . . . John S. rarely posts and if he did he would need to write just as much of an elaborate explanation. You are blessed with writing skils and we all would like to know the method he uses so . . so to make it easy how about explianing the method in installments?
Warmest regards,
Ed

It is true that John doesn't post to the group, but he does answer individual emails when people approach him personally.
There are a couple of reasons why I hesitate to pass this knowledge on myself
1) without getting john's permission to do so, I feel I would be giving away one of his trade secrets. If he chooses to do so himself, that's fine, but I feel it only fair to check with him first. I know the ALI manifesto promotes sharing of knowledge and I am always happy to do so with my own ideas and techniques but people like John have spent a lifetime building up their knowledge and may want to hang onto that advantage. I don't know. But without speaking to him first, I would feel I'm 'being generous with someone else's money'.
2) I have not used the technique myself in my work yet, therefore I'm only going on what I've been taught/seen the results of. I could talk through the basic technique but being a relative novice I hesitate to do so - I could miss out something vital and have you all giving your model's sore eyes or wasting your alginate or something. I know the theory....but not confidently enough to teach the world! That would be irresponsible of me.
Am sure that if individuals write to John or phone him he would be happy to talk them through with more competance than I could.
Hope this doesn't seem like too much of a cop out, but it's a matter of integrity.

To Both Ed and CJ
Thank you both for your replies, I think probably the best way forward for me is to get the video Ed mentioned and actually see it in practice. I always find actually seeing or doing a better way to learn than talking about it. If then I have any questions I can refer to CJ's posts and ask the question.
Many Thanks for all your help, Keep up the good work.
ANDY.
