I also wanted to ask how many of you do much welding (if any) to build supports for your work, or frames for them to hang on? As I educate myself for the types of casting I want to do (not full body, but torso), I'm wondering if that would be useful. I might just take an introductory course to arc welding just to find out if I CAN use it even if no one else has.

Jason,
I have been working on welding a (stand) for torsos it will work but now I need to work on making it look good like it is a part of the casting. I am using an arc welder I have a friend who is teaching me how to do the welding. I'll bet if you asked around you could find some one who would be more than happy to show you how to weld. If you would like more info my e-mail is rickyoung60@yahoo.com
hope that helps
Rick

Thanks guys! After reading more info, your opinions, and looking around it seems there are many ways to successfully stand/hang/frame this type of art.
I was also fortunate enough to have someone show me just how much can be done with welding.
I've decided not to limit myself and take an intro course. At least then I'll have the basics and be able to make an informed decision as to whether I need to go further with that. Cheers!

Well, both the lifecasting course and the welding courses aren't open to take without registering full time with the college I was looking at. I also asked a professional artist if I could pay him to teach me, but he said he's too busy.
Looks like I'm limited to the videos for now.

Dear Jason
Take a few days and join Dave Parvin's lifecasting course or Philip
Hitchcock's. Both are top-notch lifecasting instructors.
Warmest regards
Ed McCormick
