This is the piece that started it all off. It's a collaborative effort
between me and my lifecasting mentor, Andre Masters. He made the original
fibreglass piece for demonstration purposes when he was introducing me to
fibreglass and gave me the plain piece (which has copper and pearlescent
powders in the gel coat)as a present and said 'Now go away and do something
interesting with it' (or words to that effect).
The result was 'Samurai', which was inspired by my interest in tattoos (I
don't have tattoos myself, but love to look at other people's). I based it
on the leaping Koi Carp designs popular with Japanese sailors. It's quite a
difficult piece to photograph, being rather shiny, so you see different
parts of the design as you turn it from the light. The tattoo is an
engraving (I got rather into engraving in my jewellery/silversmithing days)
and I enjoyed the whole process of engraving the lifecast that I started
applying it to my plasterwork too (more to come on that soon).
I rubbed blacking polish into the cast to age the copper and change the
engraving from white to black. I love the subtlety of the piece because it
is dark on dark. The straps are 3 tone leather plaits, which I thought made
it look more like wearable armour.
