Almost done.
This one is called 'Marked'. The engravings are based on Maori and Samoan
tribal tattoos. It's burnished and patinated copper over plaster. My fine
engraving tool broke five minutes into this piece, so I had to finish it
with a massive great tool not meant for the job, which is why the lines are
much bolder carvings than previous tattooed pieces. It was like taking out a
tooth using a road drill at first, but after a couple of hours at it I sort
of got used to it. I still like it, but if I did it again the work would be
much finer. Sadly I didn't have time to replace my broken engraver as my
deadline was so tight.
I am quite glad I didn't sell this piece at The Barbican in a way - means I
have something to show at my December exhibition, which I am looking forward
to because I will be the only lifecaster at this particular show and it will
have greater impact than the smaller pieces.
I have included a 'making of' picture strip so you can see some of the
different stages it went through building up the metal coating of copper
curing, polishing, burnishing and engraving.
another one coming. hope I'm not being too annoying showing all these at
once, but if i don't show now I may not have time till after xmas.

Thank you!
Although I think I might have accidentally stirred up some controversy with
this piece. A friend from New Zealand has pointed out the Maori are not keen
on anyone but Maori using their symbols. I didn't copy directly from a
particular tattoo, but just made up the shapes that were inspired by tattoos
I had seen in my research. However, I completely failed to research the
political situation in New Zealand at the moment which is apparently quite a
sensitive area for those living there, and I forget sometimes that images
can have more potency than the ones I have assigned them in my arty moods.
Apparently the popstar Robbie Williams has been given quite a hard time
because he used Maori warrior tattoos on his shoulder. Serves me right for
just looking at tattoos as 'pretty' or 'powerful' without truly
understanding the meaning of that power.
Ah well, I suppose a little bit of controversy never really did any artist
any harm. Except perhaps Oscar Wilde...for completely different reasons.
Glad you liked it though!
